Vera Lane Studio: Woodland Props

Hello!

I hope you had a lovely weekend.
(Don't Mondays come around quickly?)

I am delighted to say that I was a runner up in the World Wide Open Design Team Challenge  with my last Vera Lane Studio project which you can see here.

Today I have some cards that I created for Vera Lane Studio to show some of the digital stamps in the newly released Woodland Props set.

I tried something I've not done for a while ... watercolour.
Oh. My. Goodness.  That brought back memories (and not good ones!).
I went on a watercolour course and it terrified me. We were expected to paint landscapes that consisted mainly of snowy scenes and marshes. I was horrified at how uncontrollable watercolours are.

Anyhow ... I digress.

I decided to make watercolour backgrounds for my cards - trying to create a dip dye look and an ombre look.

The cards are, I think, quite clean and simple - and this is a style that does not come easily to me.

Here is the first:

The watercolour paper was taped to my work surface which helped in two ways - it kept the paper in place and it provided a neat border. I wet the paper before applying the paints and this created the ombre look. I used Cadmium Yellow and Cadmium Orange,  adding extra pigment towards the top and bottom. The gorgeous flower image from Woodland Props was flipped and added to a second flower image. They were coloured with alcohol pens, then fussy cut leaving a white border. I popped them on foam pads for dimension. The sentiment is from Sentiments Set 1. I matted on kraft card before adhering to the card base.

My second card is neither ombre nor dip dye - but I replicated the colours used for the birds. The birds are supposed to be blue tits (one of my favourite birds because they are so tiny and beautifully coloured). This time I added the colours separately and dried the paper with my heat tool inbetween colours. I used Sap Green, Cobalt Blue and Cadmium Yellow. I tried to soften the edges by applying more water. The images are all from Woodland Props,  the birds have been resized and flipped - something we can't do with rubber stamps! They were coloured with alcohol pens, fussy cut and popped on foam pads. The sentiment is from  Sentiments Set 1.

And finally, of course, I had to use The Foxes on the Woodland Props - they were made for each other!

Here I made a dip dye look with the watercolours, again drying each colour before adding the next. I started at the top with the lightest and gradually went darker. This time I trimmed my watercolour paper and inked the edges lightly with Tim Holtz Vintage Photo. I adore these foxes - aren't they cute? I feel that they are standing in mid-air, but adding more to the base would have taken away from the CAS nature I was trying to create.
Here are the digital sets I used:

Little Tree ATC

Hello!

Happy Friday to you!

The temperature is freezing and the snow arrived!

Today I'm posting an ATC I made for a swap with Limited Runs in their Facebook group.

I bought this lovely Limited Runs digital image in December and never got around to using it, so I thought I'd make my ATC with it.  It's called Little Tree.

I printed the image twice, resizing it for the second print, so that the tree is larger than the girl. I  fussy cut the girl and tree and coloured them with Spectrum Noir markers. Clear Nuvo Crystal Drops  were added to the baubles/snow on the tree and glitter to the star.
The background was made by ink blending my card using Memento Rosebud and Tim Holtz Crushed Olive. I added some stamped text in Tim Holtz Vintage Photo ink. The tree was glued directly onto the card, and the little girl popped up on foam pads. The sentiment is from Vera Lane Studio Sentiments set 1. Once cut out, it was inked around the edges and popped on foam pads. A hand drawn border finishes it off.

Thanks for stopping by today.

If You Give A Crafter A Cookie: Bugaboo Penguins

Hello crafty friends!

I hope your week is going well.
Here in the NW of England we are managing to keep warm and haven't had the snow ... yet.

Today is the start of a brand new challenge at
If You Give A Crafter A Cookie.
You can enter your projects until January 25th.

Our sponsor is the wonderful Bugaboo Stamps.

And here is the image to spark your imagination:

Such beautiful penguin and snowflake cookies.
How will they inspire you?

I was lucky to be given a Bugaboo stamp to work with - it's the Penguin Trio Block and I went along with a similar colour scheme to the photo.

The image  was coloured with Spectrum Noir markers and iridescent glitter applied to the snow caps and flakes. The image was matted on to black card.
The background was made by blending distress inks (Tim Holtz  Spun Sugar and Shaded Lilac) onto satin silk art card from Inkilicious. Snowflake clusters were stamped in clear embossing ink to give a watermark effect, then some snowflakes were heat embossed with Snowflake Tinsel embossing powder. The background was then matted onto black card and the image block adhered on foam pads.

That's all from me for today. Now it's over to you...

Please pop over to the
If You Give A Crafter A Cookie
challenge blog to check out the lovely designs by the rest of the DT.

We would love for you to share your projects in the challenge!

You could win digi stamps or become one of our 'Top Cookies'!

Thanks for stopping by today!

Vera Lane Studio: Rain or Shine on Straight Street

Hello!

First of all, a warm welcome to some new followers - Sonia, Sherry, Melissa and Mary. I'm delighted that you've joined me on my creative journey!

I'm thrilled that these projects were a Winner at Angie's Digital Stamps, a Runner -Up Winner at  World Wide Open Design Team Challenge and DT Favourite at Classic Design Team Challenge.

Today I'm sharing my weekly project for the lovely Vera Lane Studio
Every day there is a new DT project, and you can find the talented Vera Lane DT ladies' blogs in my side bar.
This week I made a desk tidy, a stand-up calendar and a little card using images from four Vera Lane Studio digi sets:

The images I used are from
Rain or Shine         and        Straight Street

I kept my colour palette limited to corals and turquoises for this.
I coloured my images with Spectrum Noir alcohol markers and pencils.
( Markers: FS1, FS3, CR1, CR2, CR3, BT1. BT2, BT3, BT4, GT1, GT2)
I added highlights using white, gold and pink glitter gel pens. I fussy cut the images leaving thin white borders for the main images.

To make the desk tidy:
I applied a thin layer of gesso to the mdf desk tidy base, its top edge and side corners. When this was dry I applied gold paint. (I used a brand called Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch which is a water based, multi-purpose paint for interior and exterior projects. It has a beautiful lustre to it.) Next I cut my patterned paper (I love polka dot paper and this colour is gorgeous) ... it just so happened that each side of the tub is ATC sized, so the paper was cut 2.5 x 3.5 inches (6.5 x 9 cms).
I glued the paper to the tub using Decoupage glue, then glued the images in place using the same glue. The sentiments, which come with the Rain or Shine digi set, were cut into strips and stuck down. For the homes, I printed computer generated sentiments. I drew around the sentiment strips with a Uniball mico pen.The edges of the papers were inked with Tim Holtz Vintage Photo.

The  stand-up calendar was really easy to make:

Cut a piece of heavy card 30 x 10.5 cm. Score and fold at 10.5 cm, 21 cm, 24 cm and 27 cm. Tape the end 3 cm panel to the back of the bottom of the front panel. Then decorate as you wish.
I resized the Straight Street images and put them together before I printed, as my available space was quite restricted. I popped the image on foam pads for dimension. (My calendar cost just 25 pence from Ryman Stationery, but you can see the stitching is already falling apart!)

The card was originally going to be part of the calendar, but then I realised I didn't have any heavy 12 x 12 inch card, so I had to make the calendar smaller. 'Waste not, want not' as the saying goes, I made a card from the images:

The cat is from Cats and Crocks and the word 'Smile' is from Sentiments Set 1. Little peachy coloured gems were stuck onto the tree and white gel pen added for some highlights.
